When your baby is quite little but can’t sit up, here’s a list of activities you can do to keep them occupied:
Book time (Where’s Mr Lion or That’s Not My Polar Bear)
Toy time (rattles, crinkly toys, teething toys)
Put him on his play mat with a toy arch and mirror
Put him in his bouncy chair to watch you
Do the laundry
Cook
Clean the house
Take a shower
Change the sheets
You can give them things to hold whilst you do these things, such as a pillow case, sock, rounded spoon or bath toy, so they feel involved. Explaining what you are doing also increases their engagement and builds your bond.
Practicing sitting:
Sit on the floor, placing baby between your legs, with their back to you. Hold their hands so you can compensate for any wobbles.
If they are able to lean forward and take their weight, hold only their thighs so they can practice strengthening their back muscles independently
Practicing standing (this doesn’t last long)
Practicing rolling
On the floor, roll your baby from the hip, so they get used to the motion.
Use a baby yoga routine
Play with musical instruments
Seat him on your lap while you play piano
Use egg shakers or bells
Dancing and singing whilst holding baby can be soothing for you too!
Play with a baby sensory kit like this one
Failing this, a walk to the shops or to see the duckies is a good bet. The supermarket can be a place of wonder and joy - there is so much to look at!
